Local vet, despite numerous injuries, takes gold in Valor Games

An Elk Grove resident and disabled veteran, the 58-year-old recently earned a gold medal in rowing while participating in the Valor Games Far West. The event took place June 2-5 at the Coast Guard Station Alameda, and featured over 100 veterans and active duty service members with disabilities. Specific events included archery and field, rowing, powerlifting, bench press, badminton, wheelchair basketball, cycling, swimming, boccia, wheelchair tennis, a biathlon, and a paratriathlon. West campus cares for disabled veterans at West Coast Valor Games

Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West campus had a prominent presence at the fifth annual Valor Games Far West, a multi-sport Paralympic competition for disabled U.S. veterans and wounded, ill or injured service-members, held June 2-5 on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, Calif..

Introduced in 2011, the Valor Games are funded through a grant sponsored by the U.S. Veterans Administration. Regional events are held annually in four parts of the country. Athletes compete in a variety of adapted sports, including archery, biathlon, cycling, field events, powerlifting, and swimming. Read the complete article.

Coast Guard Hosts Annual Valor Games

The fifth annual Valor Games took place Friday, June 2, to Monday, June 5 on Coast Guard Island. For the last four years Coast Guard Island has hosted the event. The event brings together disabled veterans and active service duty members to engage in the three days of Paralympic sport competitions.

The environment was spirited with supportive cheers and gracious displays of sportsmanship, perseverance and patriotism. Special appearances from Medal of Honor Recipient James A. Taylor and Paralympic Bronze Medalist Angela Madsen to former 49er’s Super Bowl Champion Dennis Brown and some of the original Rosie the Riveters made the event even more notable. Read the complete article.

Valor Games Far West 2017 returns to Coast Guard Island

Alameda, CA – The Valor Games Far West is a sport competition for Veterans and active duty service members who have a disability and are eligible for VA healthcare. Dates for the event, part of the national Valor Games series, are June 2-5, 2017. Disabled Veterans and service members will learn adaptive sports techniques and compete at venues on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, CA. Sports will include archery, biathlon, cycling, field, paratriathlon, powerlifting, rowing (indoor), and swimming. Clinics in the following sports will also be offered: badminton, boccia, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. Read the complete article.
